AQUINO PASSES BILL TO PROTECT STUDENT DATA

05/23/2019

SPRINGFIELD – A bill sponsored by State Senator Omar Aquino (D-Chicago) that would protect students against unethical collection of data passed the Senate today.

House Bill 3606 would protect the meta-data for K-12 students from commercial use and provide transparency to parents about their child’s data.

“We need to think to the future and establish online consumer protections,” said Aquino. “I want to be as proactive as possible when it comes to protecting peoples’ online data, and this measure will protect some of our most vulnerable online users.”

The measure is supported by Raise Your Hand for Illinois Public Education, an organization that advocates for equitable public education policy.

House Bill 3606 will go back to the House for concurrence before being sent to the governor.
